The Dierberg Vineyard in Santa Maria Valley, Drum Canyon Vineyard in Sta. Rita Hills, and Star Lane Vineyard in Happy Canyon are all owned by Jim and Mary Dierberg, founded in 1996. They cover three distinct areas of vineyard land all situated to produce Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Bordeaux varieties from large acreage parcels, with smaller blocks of Syrah, Nebbiolo, Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon, Chenin, Blanc, and Viognier as well. With double masters in Botany (Colorado State) and Viticulture & Enology (UC Davis), the talented Tyler Thomas brings a compelling resume with him as the winemaker for all releases under the Dierberg and Star Lane labels. The climate and soils at Star Lane Vineyard in Happy Canyon reduce the risk of pest pressure that forced many growers to begin using rootstocks. Star Lane has found that the higher elevation hillside blocks they planted to “own-rooted” Cabernet Sauvignon consistently produce exceptional and unique wine. This is one of the finest sources for Cabernet Sauvignon in the entire Santa Barbara County region. Pair with aged cheddars and goudas, steak, and lamb.
