It was 1995 when Steve Clifton made the first Palmina wines in the basement of his home. It was also at that time when Steve met Greg Brewer, which led to the partnership in the Brewer-Clifton project to produce Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from single vineyard locations in the Sta. Rita Hills appellation. Chrystal Seals Clifton developed a love of Italian food and wine culture while studying abroad and applied that passion for many years at some of Santa Barbara’s top restaurants, including the Bacara Resort. Upon joining Palmina her language skills were paramount in forging relationships with producers in Italy and provided a wealth of insight towards their philosophy and style. This Barbera is sourced from vineyards throughout the Santa Ynez Valley, including the Sta. Rita Hills, Los Alamos, and Los Olivos. Steve vinifies and ages all those parcels separately until working on the blend. The barrels used are both Slovenian and French, but all used for several vintages. Once the blend is finalized the wine is racked back into tank for a few months before bottling.
