Gaillac is one of the oldest grape growing regions in France. Located in the southwestern corner of the country it was the Romans that came up from the South and first planted grapes here. They favored the steep hillsides for the grapes since they couldn’t grow grain there. Domaine du Moulin was founded in 1827. It is truly a family affair with all member of the Hirissou family handling their fair share. The son Nicolas is the winemaker, the father Jean-Paul tends the fields and the mother Dominique pours samples to guests in cellar tasting room. They own about 93 acres on both sides of the Tarn river which gives them the opportunity to farm on two types of soil, gravel and chalk. The blend consists of 60% Duras and 40% Syrah, from 25+ year old vines, each vinified separately then blended later. Fermentation is all tank. Drink now.
