Virgile Lignier is the third generation to work the family’s 8.5 hectares (21 acres). Previously, his father and grandfather focused on selling their grapes to negociants. In 1992, Virgile released the first small drops of domaine bottled wines, and by 2000 all their parcels were bottled under the family name. Over the course of the past 17 years Virgile moved their farming to organic practices and has become a key producer in their home village of Morey St. Denis. The vines of ‘En la Rue de Vergy’ were planted in 1974 and this vineyard is located around some legendary parcels—just above (to the west of) grand cru ‘Clos de Tart’ and grand cru ‘Bonnes Mares’, and on the north side by grand cru ‘Clos des Lambrays’. In 2014, they went 30% whole cluster fermentation with 25% new oak barrels to produce a stunning village level wine. Their holdings in ‘En la Rue de Vergy’ are the largest for the domaine at 1.9 hectares, producing around 800 cases a year.
