Grimms Bluff Cabernet Estate 2014

"I met Rick Grimm last year when he stopped by Les Marchands to introduce himself and taste us on his wines. A cordial, soft spoken man with a soft drawl, Grimm moved to Santa Barbara in 2010 with his wife and family after years of living in Monaco. He had sold his company and was looking for a place to settle down in the U.S. and found a ranch in Happy Canyon that they fell in love with. Their ranch is a whopping 246 acres but they only have 16 or so under vine planted to cabernet sauvignon, petit verdot, and sauvignon blanc. The ranch is unique in that it sits at 850 feet above sea level on the eastern edge of the Happy Canyon AVA with fantastic views of Lake Cachuma and Los Padres National Forest behind. With its proximity you would think that it could be too hot to grow grapes but the Santa Ynez River runs adjacent to the vineyards and provides some cool moisture when the temps get too hot. The vineyards were all planted biodynamically and are still farmed that way making Grimm’s Bluff one of just a few vineyards in the area to be planted biodynamically from the start. Grimm hired famed winemaking consultant Paul Lato to choose the best vineyard site on the property, the clones to plant and to make the wine. An excellent call, I would say. In addition a few bottlings of Cabernet they also make two excellent Sauvignon Blancs as well." - JB
