Felsina was founded in 1966 by Domenico Poggiali, who developed the properties, wines and business side in the following years along with his son Giuseppe Poggiali. In the 1970s his son-in-law Giuseppe Mazzocolin took over  the estate and brought in a friend, Franco Bernabei , to be the oenologist. Beginning with the 1983 vintage and the birth of Fontalloro and Rancia, the estate began to take its place among the premier wineries of not only Italy, but also the wider wine world. The Rancia vineyard takes its name from the historic Rancia farmhouse which was once a Benedictine monastery and its soil and high-altitude produces a Chianti Classico Riserva that is an example of compelling mastery.  Rancias can age easily for 20 – 30 years. This one is drinking perfectly today but will last another 5 if you decide to wait. But you shouldn’t you should drink this now and drink as much as you can.

A rare 3L bottling.

Tasting notes: Signs of an aged wine but doesn’t look “old”. On the nose there are waves of flowers, smoke, tobacco, black berries and a myriad of other wonderful smells. Total nosing time for me was 7 minutes before I actually took a sip. On the palate - cherries, spice and sweet tobacco precede the fine, silky tannins. There is a kiss of acidity at the end that makes it all come together and the finish seems to last forever. Very fun to drink! {insert happy face emoji  here} – JNB
