Courcel Pommard Rugiens 2011

Domaine de Courcel is highly regarded as one of the premier producers in Pommard.  An appellation with a history of producing powerful and richly flavored wines, de Courcel has long be able to coerce the most elegant and balanced nuances from their vineyards. The domaine has been under ownership by the de Courcel family for over 400 years. ‘Grand Clos des Epenots’ and ‘Les Rugiens’ are their two most famous parcels, witt 'Rugiens’ being only 1 hectare while ‘Epenots’ covers almost five hectares and comprises half of the domaine’s production (average vine age is 60 years).  While in the glass, expect to find some sweet spice, with concentrated yet elegant flavors, and a long finish. As with many 1er Cru selections from Pommard it will benefit from aging or resting in a decanter for at least one hour.  For your Burgundy factoid, I only listed 1er Cru wines in the previous sentence because the appellation of Pommard does not hold any Grand Cru vineyards. Don’t let that deter you however because while looking at some photos of the domaine online I saw this quote from a very respected Burgundy reviewer regarding the ‘Les Rugiens’ bottling from de Courcel, “If you can find it, buy it.”
