Castro Candaz is a new project from Raúl Pérez and Rodri Méndez, the duo behind Forjas de Salnés in the Rías Baixas. While Raúl’s two most famous Ribeira Sacra bottlings, La Penitencia and El Pecado, come from the Amandi district of the appellation, the fruit for these wines comes from Chantada.
95 points Luis Gutiérrez (Wine Advocate): "The 2015 A Boca do Demo comes from a single vineyard in the Chantada zone within Ribeira Sacra. The small plot is walled and terraced, planted with ancient vines of mixed varieties. If wines from the Amandi subzone are similar to the Rhône, this is more like Burgundy: terribly elegant, perfumed, insinuating and all about finesse and nuance. The palate is super refined, with great freshness and the acidity better integrated than the other reds. It feels like an improvement over the first vintage of 2013 (it was not produced in 2014). With time there is a flinty character in the glass. 3,000 bottles produced. Drink 2017-2022." (Aug 2017)
Blend: Mostly Mencía with Domingo Pérez (Trousseau), Garnacha Tintorera (Alicante Bouschet) and Caiño.
